Exports of wood and wood products to be difficult in 2nd half of 2023

AsemconnectVietnam - In June of 2023, Vietnam’s exports of wood and wood products were estimated at 1.05 billion USD, down by 0.1% compared to May of 2023 and sharply down by 26.2% compared to June of 2022.

In which, the export value of wood products was estimated at 728 million USD, down by 4.3% compared to May of 2023 and down by 23.4% compared to June of 2022.
Generally in the first 6 months of 2023, the export value of wood and wood products was estimated at 6 billion USD, down by 28.8% over the same period of 2022. In which, the export value of wood products was estimated at 4.1 billion USD, down by 32.8% over the same period of 2022.
According to the assessment of the Import-Export Department (under the Ministry of Industry and Trade), wooden furniture is the main export item in the structure of exported wood and wood products, but the export value of this item decreased sharply, due to the world economy is still facing many difficulties and challenges, causing global purchasing power to drop sharply, and orders for interior products to decrease significantly.
The exports of most wooden furniture items fell sharply. In the first 5 months of 2023, the exports of wooden frame chairs reached 1.1 billion USD, down by 26.7% over the same period of 2022. It was followed by living room and dining room furniture with 750.1 million USD, down by 45.9%; and bedroom furniture reached 581.4 million USD, down by 45.7%.
In addition, in the first 5 months of 2023, the exports of some wood products and wood products also decreased, such as the exports of wood chips reached 826 million USD, down by 8.3%; wood, plank and flooring reached 653.1 million USD, down by 27.2%; wood pellets reached 255.9 million USD, down by 27.2%.
According to the Import and Export Department, exporters of wood and wood products are facing unprecedented difficulties at the same time when they are facing a shortage of orders, running out of cash flow, and facing trade barriers from the US and new barriers in the EU market. Therefore, the ability to boost the exports of wood and wood products in the last months of the year will continue to face many difficulties.
